Our hormones play a critical part in almost every aspect of healthy human function. From metabolism and appetite, to digestion, weight, sleep, mood and fertility, our bodies are constantly producing the hormones they need to keep us in a state of ‘homeostatis’, or continual balance.

All sorts of factors can tip that balance. Underlying health conditions and certain medications can of course have an impact, but lifestyle issues such as poor nutrition, stress, too much or too little exercise, and exposure to everyday chemicals and toxins, also play a huge part. This is where nutritional therapy can help.

Hormonal imbalances can occur when there are fluctuations or disruptions in the optimal levels of hormones in the body. Overtime these hormonal imbalances can cause a host of serious health problems, diabetes, high blood pressure, obesity, heart disease, hypertension, autoimmune conditions and more. 

All sorts of factors can tip that balance. This warm roast veggie salad is a perfect transition from winter ❄️ to spring 🌷🌸.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉Roast some veggies (here I have golden beetroot, peppers, sweet potato and tomatoes) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉Avo chopped up ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉1 tin of lentils ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉A handful of olives⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉A handful of kale chopped up (marinate it in the below dressing whilst the veggies are cooking) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
👉Dressing of olive oil, apple cider vinegar, Dijon mustard ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

But what actually is it? ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Premenstrual syndrome (PMS) is associated with the “lutel phase” after ovulation, which is typically between days 15 and 28 of the cycle. During this period there is a rise and fall of oestrogen and progesterone, and it’s this wave of hormones that is thought to be directly related to PMS. There over 200 symptoms associated with PMS, the most common being depression/anxiety, irritability, fatigue, abdominal cramping, breast tenderness and headaches. Of course, our cycles are not stagnant and PMS symptoms can worsen at times of significant hormonal changes such as puberty, taking or stopping contraception, postnatal and perimenopause.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
But the good thing is there is ALOT we can do to help support ourselves during this time with diet and lifestyle!⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

😴 Lack of sleep lowers leptin levels which is our hunger regulating hormone. Which is why after a bad nights sleep we tend to crave carbohydrates⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

😴 Our circadian rhythms are impacted by WHEN we eat food. Our metabolism changes throughout the day based on our circadian rhythms, eating later at night when our bodies are geared up to sleep confuses our internal body clocks. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

😴 Studies show that eating, low fibre, more saturated fats, sugary and processed foods impacts how we sleep. Participants had a lighter, less restorative sleep and woke up more throughout the night.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

This means making sure that you include a balance of complex carbohydrates (my preference is this comes from vegetables) a good source or protein and healthy fats (such as extra virgin olive oil, avocado, nuts and seeds).⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

👉 They are incredibly dense source of minerals such as folate, iron, potassium, magnesium. Which are all essential for balancing out our hormones and stress levels ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

👉High in vitamins K, C, E, and many of the B vitamins. Make sure you have with some healthy fats such as extra virgin olive oil to aid the absorption of those fat soluble vitamins (K and E)⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

👉 High in polyphenols which are a form of micronutrient found in plants. There are over 8000 different types of polyphenols out there so make sure you have a diet rich in a diverse number of plants. Instead of using mashed potatoes its a thick layer of tahini crust 🤤. An amazing alternative which is equally creamy and rich. If you have been following me for a while you will know my obsession with tahini (sesame paste) ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

I tend to increase my intake in my Luteal phase which helps to ease my PMS symptoms, as it is rich in Lignans (phytoestrogens) which help manage oestrogen levels, Magnesium which helps support fatigue and stress levels, calcium to help ease cramps and a whole host of other essential nutrients. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
